Step 3 explains avenues which are available to you financially, from personal income to funding available for your research


Scholarships

Australian citizens and permanent residents

Deakin University offers a range of scholarships for higher degree by research candidates, including Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) and Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (DUPRS).

Other scholarships include Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry), ICT scholarships, CSIRO scholarships, industry-funded scholarships and a range of other schemes. Information is available from the Research Services Division Industry and other scholarships website.

International students

Deakin University offers two main categories of scholarship to international applicants: International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and Deakin University International Research Scholarships (DUIRS). The closing date for international scholarship applications is 30 September each year.

IPRS scholarships are available to outstanding higher degree by research applicants from any country other than Australia or New Zealand who have not commenced candidature at an Australian institution. The Commonwealth Government provides tuition fees and some allowances and Deakin University provides a stipend for the candidate and dependants.

DUIRS scholarships are available to higher degree by research applicants from any country other than Australia or New Zealand who have not commenced candidature at Deakin University. The scholarships cover tuition fees and may also include financial support in the form of a stipend, payment for teaching, research assistance, or a combination of these.

Employment

Full-time candidates are expected to devote the majority of their time to the research program. It is possible to undertake a limited amount of paid work provided that it does not interfere with the progress of the research program. Approval must be obtained from the supervisor and Head of School before undertaking employment. The usual limit is a maximum of six hours per week. There may be limited opportunities for part-time employment within the University. You should contact your Head of School for information, or the Deakin University Student Association.

Financial Support

Most Faculties and Schools provide some financial support for their higher degree by research candidates. This support may include project costs and assistance to attend conferences. Your School HDR co-ordinator can provide you with information regarding financial assistance available to you.

Insurance

University policy

The University has a personal accident insurance policy for higher degree by research candidates whilst engaged in activities organised by, approved by or under the control of Deakin University including the travel to and from such activities.

Candidates travelling overseas are strongly advised to arrange overseas travel insurance in addition to the above cover.

DUSA policy

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) also has personal accident insurance cover for students. Completed forms must be lodged within 30 days of the date of injury. The plan only applies to injuries sustained whilst involved in a University activity. To check whether you are eligible for cover under this policy, please contact DUSA.
