Safety Induction Program

Trimester 1, 2012

We welcome you to our Faculty and hope you enjoy your academic training during your degree course.

The Faculty is required to make you fully aware of the Occupational Health and Safety issues related to the different aspects of your course and to achieve this there are compulsory safety units run by each of the Schools.

Please ensure you are enrolled into one or more of the safety units listed below, depending on the units and course that you are enrolled in.

PLEASE NOTE: Failure to successfully complete the on-line Safety Test will result in attendance in practical classes/workshops (where applicable) being restricted.  In addition, results for all units requiring the completion of a Safety Induction Program as a co-requisite will not be released until the relative Safety Test is passed.

Architecture and Building based courses

SRA010 - Safety Induction Program (S, X)

We welcome you to our School and hope you enjoy your academic training during your degree course. The School is required to make you fully aware of the Occupational Health and Safety issues related to the different aspects of your course.

SRA010 - Safety Induction Program is compulsory for all students undertaking S342 Bachelor of Design (Architecture), S346 Bachelor of Construction Management, D364 Bachelor of Design (Architecture)/Bachelor of Construction Management, D365 Bachelor of Construction Management/Bachelor of Facilities Management, S700 Master of Architecture, S701 Master of Architecture (Design) and any new students.

You are required:

  1. To attend a Safety Induction Seminar and Workshop (A&B). 

The seminar and workshop includes discussion of OH&S responsibilities of staff and students, emergency procedures and evacuation, introduction to staff who assist with first aid and emergency, evacuation procedures and a short video on aspects of laboratory or workshop safety.

  1. Complete an on-line Safety Test after you have attended the Safety Induction Seminar and workshop. At the completion of the seminar you will be given details of how to access the on-line test. You must have completed the on-line test before week four of Trimester 1.

PLEASE NOTE: it is mandatory for all students involved in first year units that have a practical structures laboratory or design component to complete this unit.

Further attendance in all practical classes will be restricted unless students have successfully completed the on-line Safety Test.  Results for all units requiring the completion of SRA010 as a co-requisite will not be released until the Safety Test is passed.

SRA010 Seminar and Workshop times

Trimester 1, 2012: Seminars and workshops will be presented during February & March 2012 in the trimester 1 Orientation Week. The Safety Induction Seminar will be held immediately after the Faculty Welcome session. Details of times and rooms will be available on your individual Orientation Week itineraries and additional information will be provided at the initial Safety Induction Seminar.

Life & Environmental Science based courses

We welcome you to our School and hope you enjoy your academic training during your degree course. The School is required to make you fully aware of the Occupational Health and Safety issues related to the different aspects of your course.

SLE010 - Laboratory Safety Induction Program (B, G, W)

SLE010 Laboratory Safety Induction Program is compulsory for most students enrolled in Science level 1 units in the School of Life and Environmental Science course, as of 2009.  It is also compulsory for all students commencing Environmental Science courses, namely, S393 Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology), S398 Bachelor of Environmental Science Environmental Management, S399 Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology) and S382 Bachelor of Environmental Science (Freshwater Biology & Management). Your enrolment details will include Unit SLE010 if you are required to do it.

You are required:

  1. Engineering courses

SEE010 - Safety Induction Program (G, X)

SEE010 Safety Induction Program is a co-requisite for students enrolled in SEE103 Electronics, SEM111 Materials 1, SEP101 Physics 1A, SEP199 Engineering Professional Practice 1 or SEB121 Fundamentals of Technology Management and a course rule for all students commencing in 2008 (and thereafter) into the Bachelor of Engineering and its combined courses.  In addition, the unit should be completed in the first trimester of the first year that the student commences his/her course.

You are required:

  1. To attend a Safety Induction Seminar.  The seminar includes a discussion on OH&S responsibilities of staff and students, emergency procedures and evacuation, introduction to staff who assist with first aid and emergency evacuation and a short video on aspects of laboratory or workshop safety (see below for seminar times).
  2. To complete an on-line Safety Test as soon as possible after you have attended the Safety Induction Seminar.   At the completion of the seminar you will be given details of how to access the online test.

Information Technology based courses

We welcome you to our School and hope you enjoy your academic training during your degree course. The School is required to make you fully aware of the Occupational Health and Safety issues related to the different aspects of your course.

SIT010 - Safety Induction Program (B, G, X)

SIT010 Safety Induction Program is a co-requisite for SIT202 and for all students enrolled in a Bachelor of Information Technology course (S326, S327, S328, S331, S333, S334 or S339) and a course rule for all students commencing in 2008 (and thereafter) into the Bachelor of Information Technology (all streams) and all of its combined courses.  In addition, the unit should be completed in the first trimester of the first year that the student commences his/her course.

To successfully complete this unit you are required to attend a Safety Induction session and complete an on-line Safety Test (available on DSO).

PLEASE NOTE: it is mandatory for all students enrolled in a Bachelor of Information Technology course to complete SIT010. Results for all units requiring the completion of a Safety Induction Program as a co-requisite will not be released until the Safety Test is passed.

Off-campus students

Off-campus students are provided with a safety workshop video clip and laboratory safety guide posted on the DSO web site for the unit to be studied before commencing the online test.  At a later stage, when students come onto campus to complete practical components of their course, students will receive additional workshop training.

Off-campus students are required to use the tools described above to help complete the on-line test for the Safety Induction Programs before week four of trimester one.

Laboratory Safety Guide: Some hard copies of the Laboratory Safety Guide will be made available at the induction session and an online version is available on the DSO website.

Deakin University acknowledges the traditional land owners of present campus sites.
