NMAG: Current Projects

Kathy Blashki and her PhD students are currently involved in these projects:

Heatherwood School: Kathy and Supawan have been working with a group of young people to assist them in the development of their own game using a software product, GBuilder, developed by Supawan Prompramote. GBuilder is a tool that allows students to author their own games, through Java programming and a WYSIWIG interface.

Immersive Learning Environments:

  • Karingal Park Secondary College: Kathy and the team will be assisting the school students to build a successful immersive learning environment. In addition Kathy will provide staff with professional development. The environment will become a part of PhD studies for Dawei Jai and Sophie Nichol.
  • Deakin Immersive Learning Environment (DILE): Working in partnership with property services at Deakin University, Kathy and the team have been instrumental in the implementation of two studios. Currently the team is working on a third environment that will encompass teaching, learning and research for staff and students in the New Media Technologies area

Monster KathyNorth Geelong Secondary College: A term 3 and 4 2006 project involving Prof. Blashki and Sophie Nichol. The students at NGSC worked with Sophie and Kathy to learn about Game Design and Development. The students have formed their own games design company: SASCorp and in the project learn about the processes involved in designing a game and develop their own games from scratch. However elements such as team work/ collaboration within the class have been the best outcomes. Figure 1 is an example of a game character made by a student from the class. The character is based on Prof. Kathy.

Pre-School Media Product Development: (Commercial and in confidence): Kathy, and representatives from the animation and games industry, are currently developing a children’s product. Kathy’s skills and knowledge of early childhood education and media product development are been used to ensure that the product will enhance and support early childhood growth and learning

Motion Capture: Various projects (including formulation of honours projects) are underway.

Game-Based Learning Resource Book: Kathy and Supawan are in the process of writing a resource for teachers on Games Based learning, to be published by the Victorian Government.
