Welcome to the website of the New Media Applications Group
Group Mission Statement: The New Media Applications Group seeks to explore the significant societal and
cultural impacts and influences of New Media technologies. Our interests encompass a wide range of
technologies and their applications including: Computer games, internet and web communities, DVD,
animation, special effects and film. Our focus is on the message, rather than the medium, on the
application and effects, rather than the technology itself. Our research group is unique in that
it is the first of its kind to provide a vehicle for research that is premised on the industry's
convergence of the creative and the technological. In addition, we also have a sustained interest
in user populations, in particular 'Generation Y' and pre-school.
Philosophically our research is premised on the notion that technology does not, and should not, inform our practices in New Media.
It is human activity and interaction which informs and enhances the technology we use. In addition,
the team develops software that is meticulously designed and tested to meet the needs of specific
user groups. Currently, and in previous projects, we have developed educational products for pre-school
and primary school aged children using the precepts of games-based learning and Professor Blashki's model
of Immersive Learning Environments.
