Facilities

Deakin University has state-of-the-art facilities which support Science and Technology teaching and research activities.

Geelong Technology Precinct

One of Deakin's most outstanding facilities is the Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP), based at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds. The GTP provides a place for researchers and industry to collaborate, a venue where partnerships are formed and technology meets scientific knowledge. Visit the GTP...

The GTP houses Deakin's Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation (CMFI), a multidisciplinary research group addressing the needs of the materials manufacturing industries.  The Centre is a research intensive unit within the Faculty, and also provides teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering and Science. Historically, research activities have focussed attention on metals and natural fibres, with strong links to manufacturing industries in Australia. Recently, however, the research has bean broadened significantly to include advanced materials for automotive and aerospace applications, functional fibres and technical textiles, and biomaterials.  Research in the Centre is supported by extensive modelling expertise and leading-edge characterisation and testing facilities.

Laboratories

Motion Capture Lab

Deakin University now has a cutting edge facility at its Melbourne Campus at Burwood to produce 3D animation and special effects used in films such as The Lord of the Rings. The new facility uses the very latest optical motion capture technology. This technology creates more lifelike movements for animation characters and realistic special effects for computer games, film, tele and advertising.

Intelligent Systems Research Lab

The Intelligent Systems Research Lab has been set up to facilitate research which enables real world solutions to be delivered, encompassing data collection, decision making, output action or visualisation and problem space investigation. The strong synergies between the five research themes allow problems in a broad range of application domains, including manufacturing, power systems, transportation, defence and medicine, to be tackled.

The Faculty also has extensive Information Technology laboratories for Games Design and Development and CISCO Certification programs.

Studios

Architecture and Construction Management Studio

The vibrant new 1050 square metre Studio at Deakin’s Waterfront Campus is open to Architecture and Construction Management students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A vast modern space allows maximum flexibility for creative work and close collegiality, where students of all year levels work in the same studio and are able to easily attend each other's presentations. The studio also serves as a teaching and research laboratory for measuring sustainable use of energy, keeping students in touch with the School’s cutting edge research in built environment design and building technology.
