Off-campus study

Engineering and IT courses are available off-campus as well as on-campus. Units in other courses are also available off-campus.

Off-campus study (or distance education) offers you the flexibility and choice to make your learning experience fit with your lifestyle, work and personal commitments. It’s fast becoming the preferred way to combine study with work or family commitments and 40% of Deakin’s students choose to take their degree this way.

Students studying off-campus by distance education take exactly the same course as on-campus students, except that instead of attending lectures on-campus, you study remotely from home or work. You receive comprehensive study materials, which may include study guides, reading lists, audio and video tapes and the Deakin Software Essentials DVD.

Deakin uses online technologies to enrich learning experiences and prepares its graduates to be confident and competent using online technologies and in online environments.

Our flexible approach means Deakin makes use of technology in the way we deliver our courses. Deakin University’s lecture streaming service gives you online access to recorded lectures for many units. In addition to video and audio streaming, academic staff can provide their lectures as podcasts and downloadable MP3s. Off-campus students are supported through our award winning library services and interactive study methods, such as online conferencing which provides peer support and communication between staff members and students.

Off-campus courses

The Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Information Technology, Master of Information Technology and Postgraduate courses in Occupational Hygiene are all available in off-campus mode.

Accreditation

Deakin’s distance education coursework courses, up to and including Masters level, are externally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). Deakin is one of only four Australian universities to receive international accreditation from DETC.
