Mr Tim Ebeling
Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics)/
Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Development)
‘Engineering has the best toys'

Tim Ebeling is a double degree graduate in engineering (mechatronics) and computer science (software development) at Deakin. With three fellow students in his engineering degree, Tim has now set up his own company called 3G Engineering. He says: ‘My working life couldn't be better. It's my dream job'.

Tim completed an honours thesis on the design of an affordable USB stethoscope for home and educational use. He is something of an all-rounder - besides doing sciences, he is good at sport, has won public speaking awards, is a part-time actor, and is passionate about politics. He said: ‘I chose sciences and engineering, not because I was good at it (English was my best subject) but because it allows you to do everything. It merges logic and routine with creation and imagination. With science and engineering, you'll never be bored or unemployed or uninspired.'

Tim wonders at the idea that we live in a society that relies almost completely on science and technology that almost nobody understands. He is also convinced that engineering has the best toys – like a digital camera smaller than a 50c piece for $110, a robot made out of wood that walks on 60 individual legs and is powered completely by wind, and clothing that displays images so you can have a T-shirt that's a TV.
