Tom Stanistreet ARCHITECTURE is in the blood for second year Deakin University Bachelor of Design(Architecture)/Master of Architecture student Tom Stanistreet. Mr Stanistreet’s father was a member of the first class to undertake the architecture course at Deakin University’s Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds 30 years ago and is now a director of Oaten Stanistreet Architects in Melbourne. Although Mr Stanistreet, 20, grew up in Melbourne, he said his decision to follow in his father’s footsteps by enrolling in Deakin’s architecture program was an easy one. “It has been in the back of my mind since I was 15 and Dad has always said that Deakin produces the most well-rounded graduates,” he said. “I think he was proud when I started Architecture at Deakin.” Mr Stanistreet’s commitment to his studies was recognised when he was selected for the Dean’s Scholars Program. The program is open to top VCE students who have enrolled at Deakin and provides participants with a scholarship, mentoring and industry placement opportunities. “The program fosters high achievement and that really motivates you to stay on top of things,” he said. “I also appreciate the opportunity to bounce ideas off my mentor.” Despite the obvious appeal of architecture, it was not just the family connection that attracted Mr Stanistreet to the field. At school, he had enjoyed studying design, art, maths and science, which have all been beneficial skills in the course. His main areas of interest lie in commercial architecture and in the course he had particularly enjoyed creating designs for a gallery and a library. Mr Stanistreet said he would eventually like to work in his father’s firm, but would like to travel first. “I would like to study at least one semester and work somewhere in Europe,” he said. “It’s great that there are opportunities to study and work overseas in this course.”
