Science and Engineering Challenge

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a great way for Year 10 students to discover that Science, Engineering and Technology subjects can be fun!  The Challenge takes the students out of the classroom and gives then a day of fun, teamwork and discovery. The Geelong Challenge is open to schools in the Geelong and surrounding regions, including Werribee and Warrnambool districts. Register your schools’ interest today by filling in the registration form below.

The Challenge is sponsored on a national level by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, The Australian Constructors Association and at a local level by Rotary, Victorian Regional Channels Authority and Vicroads.  If you are interested in sponsoring the Geelong Science and Engineering Challenge, please contact the Secretary, Natalie Quick on nata@deakin.edu.au

The Geelong challenge is proudly sponsored by Rotary and is chaired by Mr Tone Alsop, Rotary District 9780.

Schools can register now for the 2010 event!

Activities

A War Machine for Austium (Catapult)

This activity involves constructing a catapult from given materials and launching a tennis ball. Points will be awarded for distance. This activity revolves around mechanical advantage and imparting energy. The efficiency with which the energy can be transferred to the projectile is also important. Video footage...

Gold Fever

This is a bridge building activity that uses a standard test rig to deliver a dynamic load. Construction materials will be supplied and are limited to those materials. The lightest bridge to hold the load wins. Construction is one activity that requires thinking about forces and this task incorporates dynamic loading thus adding another dimension to an already complex problem. Video footage...

Mission to Mars

This actually requires that students construct a vehicle from materials provided to transverse an undulating surface. Students will use rubber bands to provide the tension for the suspension system. Suspension systems are very interesting and students will need to decide on the number of wheels and experiment with the tension they place on their system. Video footage...
