Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
IBL & Internship Programs

The Science and Technology Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) enables students to incorporate an industry work placement for credit towards their degree. The placements give students the opportunity to gain discipline specific industry exposure through two types of industry placements; either through an Industry-based Learning (IBL) placement unit or an Internship placement unit.

Industry placements play a valuable role in preparing students for graduate employment by giving them an opportunity to:

  • bridge the gap between the theory and practice of your discipline
  • apply and consolidate knowledge gained in their course
  • develop good work practices
  • experience work place culture
  • explore career options relevant to their discipline
  • develop a professional network.

What is IBL?

Industry-based Learning (IBL) is a program in which students undertake an industry or research role relevant to their course, for credit as part of their degree. The Science and Technology IBL placements are offered as Faculty level elective units and are credited to the degree upon satisfactory completion of the Real World Modules Series workshops, the placement and the unit assessment.

Typically, students will not undertake any study during a full-time IBL placement but it may be possible to complete an on-line unit in the same trimester by prior approval. Students who are currently employed in a paid role relevant to their degree may be able to fit an IBL placement within their current workplace.

IBL placement students usually receive an industry funded scholarship during the placement or are paid directly by the placement provider.

What is an Internship?

An Internship is a program in which students undertake an industry or research role relevant to their course, for credit as part of their degree. The Science and Technology internship placements are offered as Faculty level elective units and are credited to the degree upon satisfactory completion of the Real World Modules Series workshops, the placement and the unit assessment.

A majority of the internship placements will be completed one day a week during a trimester as part of the normal study load, but an internship may be completed on a full-time basis over a 3 week block.

Both the internship and IBL units attract normal university fees.
