What is an Internship? An Internship involves students working in an industry, research or educational role relevant to their course as part of their degree program. The Science and Technology internships are offered as Faculty level elective units and are credited to the degree upon completion of the required unit assessment. A majority of placements will be completed one day a week during a trimester as part of the normal study load but an internship may be completed on a full-time basis over a trimester break, usually over three weeks. Internship units attract normal university fees. Who should apply? The Science and Technology Internship program is open to all students undertaking a relevant degree. Applicants must have unspecified elective units available or be prepared to pay full-fees for their internship unit. The program is open to both on and off Campus students. Please note that students enrolled in a course in which a professional practice placement is compulsory (e.g. Environmental Science, Biomedical Science, Biological Science) are required to complete that unit prior to undertaking an internship. The internship placement cannot be used towards the professional practice requirements. |

Duration of placement and credit pointsInternship placements are between 12-15 days in duration and are worth a single credit point. Internships can be undertaken during any of the trimesters. A maximum of 4 credit points can be gained through the Internship program. Nature of workInterns are usually assigned discipline specific work consisting of a variety of tasks with varying learning objectives and challenges. The nature of the work given will be relevant to the course undertaken and may have an industry, research or education focus. Students may be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement by the placement organisation. Intellectual property relating to internship placements remain with the industry partner. Work hours and leave Interns are required to observe normal work hours accepted by the organisation. The placements do not include any leave and hence, any leave taken during the placement must be off-set against the duration of the placement. Students are required to find their own placements after their internship application is approved by the Faculty. The Faculty may have some placements available but these are awarded on a competitive basis with the employer selecting students after interviewing those that have been short listed. Students who find their own placements do not have to undergo any other selection process. Organisations often prefer to have students approach them directly to negotiate a placement as it demonstrates initiative and ambition. Who chooses the student for a placement?Employers offering internships placements have total discretion in selecting students. The Faculty may be asked to short list students based on skills but, otherwise do not have any involvement in the selection process. Combining study and IBLStudents are typically expected to enrol in up to three other units while completing an internship placement. Remuneration/scholarshipThe internships do not usually include payment. Supervising and mentoring Placement organisations are required to assign an industry supervisor for the student for the duration of the placement. The student will also be assigned an academic supervisor from the Faculty. As internship placements are credited to the course of study, they are assessed. The industry supervisor is required to carry out a performance evaluation during the placement. The student must also meet continuous assessment requirements by managing their own performance, maintaining a logbook, writing several pieces of written assessment including a report and a presentation, and submit all pieces of assessment in the form of a portfolio upon conclusion of the placement. At the completion of a placement, a student is assigned a combined mark and graded as a course-work unit. If the student’s performance is found to be unsatisfactory the placement may be terminated early and the student is likely to be awarded a fail grade. Recruitment oppportunitiesPlacement providers are under no obligation to recruit IBL students upon completion of placement. Are you interested in an internship?
