Workplace obligations

As WIL student you are expected to take full responsibility for your professional outcomes as well as meet your obligations as a Deakin student.

Nature of work

Students are usually assigned graduate level work consisting of a variety of tasks with varying learning objectives and challenges. The nature of the work given will be relevant to the course undertaken and may have an industry or research focus.

Intellectual property resulting from placements remains with the host organisation. Students may also be asked to sign confidentiality agreements by the placement organisations.

Work Hours

Students are required to conform to the normal work hours observed by the organisation and are not eligible for overtime.  Students are not permitted to make special arrangements for their work hours.

Annual Leave

The placements do not include any paid leave and hence, any leave taken during the placement must be negotiated with the supervisor and off-set against the duration of the placement. The duration of placements is based on days-worked.

Sick Leave

Given the short duration of placements there is no formal sick leave allowance. If you take any time off during your placement due to illness you must:

  1. make up the time at the end of your placement,
  2. let your supervisor and the WIL Manager know as soon as possible and record it in your logbook and
  3. provide a medical certificate to your supervisor if you have taken more than three days off.

Note: As you are on a placement as part of your degree, you are accountable to the Faculty for your whereabouts during work hours. Legally, we are responsible for you during your placement and if you are not at your placement, we need to know where you are.
