The Freshwater Biology and Management course at Deakin provides students with the skills and knowledge to place them among the most highly-employable environmental science graduates in Australia, with the capacity to contribute to the conservation of the freshwater environment and management of water resources nationally and overseas.
Fieldwork is embedded in the Freshwater Biology and Management course from first to third year and focuses on lakes, wetlands and estuaries, locally and in the Grampians and Otway Ranges. The fieldwork components in all of Deakin’s Environmental Science courses provide students with practical skills and an understanding of ‘real-life’ environmental issues.
Freshwater Biology students have access to first-class facilities including a state-of-the-art fish culture system and small fleet of boats. The course is offered at the Warrnambool Campus where students are within easy reach of rivers and estuaries. Through elective study options, students have the opportunity to add an understanding of marine systems, including tropical environments, to their freshwater knowledge.
Deakin’s government and industry partners such as Parks Victoria, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and catchment management authorities provide input to the course to ensure it is relevant and graduates continue to offer employers highly sought-after skills and knowledge.
The university’s partners provide students with opportunities for undertaking professional development and training to gain insight into day-to-day practice in the field. Students also have the opportunity to undertake scholarships with the Earthwatch Institute, working on diverse research projects addressing critical environmental issues.
A degree in Environmental Science is a broad qualification that combines the skills for a specialised career with more generic skills which give graduates job flexibility and broad career options
Students have the opportunity to undertake international exchange with partners such as Waterloo University, Coastal Carolina University and the University of Idaho.
