Energy And Sustainability Technologies (EAST group)

  • Power generation and greenhouse gas emission reduction
  • Sustainable buildings and construction
  • Energy efficient water treatment and desalination
  • Intelligent energy systems
  • Renewable energy applications

The EAST (Energy And Sustainability Technologies) group at Deakin University is a progressive response to the need to pool Deakin’s expertise to research, develop and solve the problems we face in the present era of climate change.  Faculty members of the EAST are recipients of Large ARC Discovery, ARC Linkage, AusIndusrty, CRC’s, Science Technology and Innovations, CSIRO Flagship and SmartWater Fund grants.  Our contracted projects have been with the Australian Greenhouse Office, Building Commission, Sustainability Victoria, Department of Human Services, the CSIRO, and NanoVic.

The EAST group has the expertises in

  • Solar thermal technologies, heating and cooling technologies;
  • Membrane and non-membrane desalination technologies;
  • Sustainable technologies for buildings and construction;
  • Water saving and energy efficiency technologies for power stations;
  • Conductive polymers and their innovative application;
  • Intelligent systems

Some equipment and facilities at Deakin University, which are owned and can be accessed by EAST members

  • Mobile Architecture and Built Environment Lab (MABEL);
  • MSC-Fluent;
  • TRNSYS (solar thermal simulation), ANSYS and ABACQS softwares;
  • SEM, TEM and AFM; and
  • Contact angle measurement.

Some projects currently being undertaken by EAST members

  • Energy efficient adsorption desalination technology ($350k Smart Water Fund)
  • Hybrid cooling system for power stations ($120k ARC Linkage)
  • Innovative characterisation technology for membranes (to reduce energy consumption) ($370k, CSIRO Flagship)
  • Building Adaptive Reuse ($210k, ARC Linkage)
  • Vehicle intelligent energy system ($85k, ARC Linkage and AutoCRC)
  • Solar Aided Power Generation (Special Australia-China Fund)
