Research
Information Security and Forensics
Several dozen staff and students in the Faculty of Science and Technology work around several major themes:
- Cryptographic applications.
- Network security and forensics.
- Business application security.
- Forensic tools.
Business application security work is also undertaken with the Faculty of Business and Law. We will work on developing a social and psychological perspective with the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences in future years.
Major Projects Undertaken in 2006
- Development of an industry & university based electronic security cluster in Victoria . This was successful in acquiring $110,000 from Multi Media Victoria. Deakin was the lead applicant and both the Faculty of Science and Technology and the University have committed time and money for a minimum of two years.
- Discussions with the Intelligent Systems Research group in the School of Engineering and Information Technology have resulted in a model incorporating reliability and security of networks into future research plans.
- A small lab was established on the Burwood campus; a manager hired; equipment contributed by the School of Engineering and Information Technology and by Telstra Research Labs; a security and forensic software archive established.
- A workshop was run in July by Deakin, School of Engineering and Information Technology in collaboration with RNSA (Research Network for Safeguarding Australia). The title was ‘Social Engineering’ and participants were from industry, education and government departments, including a number of overseas, NSW and Queensland participants.
Goals for 2007 and Beyond
- The group plans to leverage its relationships within the Faculty of Science and Technology and with the security components of the Faculty of Business and Law to establish a University Research Priority Area.
- Deakin eSecurity will extend its collaboration with the eSecurity cluster in Victoria to generate major return on investment for Deakin.
