The annual Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC), measures staff and student research output, in order to calculate part of the research funding awarded to each institution.
The Deakin Research Online (DRO) repository has been established in order to make Deakin's research highly visible and accessible through a global network of services such as OAIster, ARROW, Google Scholar and Internet search engines.
All staff and student research publications are now being entered onto DRO, where open access to full text versions can be made possible in most instances. Data is extracted from DRO for the annual HERDC submission and to update reports on the University's Research website.
Where the publisher allows, open access to the published version will be made visible on DRO.
In order to ensure that all research publications are reported and that the HERDC submission (and resultant income for Faculty of Science & Technology and Institute for Technology Research & Innovation- ITRI) is optimised, the submission process for research publications will be two-fold, depending on category, as follows:
Categories of output to be reported for the HERDC are:
The Faculty is trialling a new process for the 2011 publications collection. Faculty administrative staff will be contacting authors from late August to commence the collection of 2011 publications that meet the HERDC requirements. For any queries regarding the 2011 publications collection please contact Sandra Dunoon (Sandra.dunoon@deakin.edu.au, 72270) or Andrea Jeffreys (andrea.jeffreys@deakin.edu.au, 17460)
Deakin University also collects publication data in many additional categories. The full list of research output categories and definitions for the HERDC and Deakin collection is listed in the current Guide to Reporting Publications, available from the Research Services Publications Forms and Guidelines website.
For these categories the Faculty/ITRI submission process is:
Staff, students and visitors can search the University's publication reports by individual researcher or by School or Faculty for a specific year.
Staff who are new to Deakin can have their older publications (from 2005 on) added to their record at Deakin. Please contact Anna Wasterval (anna.wasterval@deakin.edu.au) for details.
DRO may be searched by Author, Subject or 'Community/Collection' (includes Schools and the Faculty of Business and Law) as well as by advanced search combinations.
