- About Deakin
The Nick Beattie Award was an international practice scholarship program initiated by Deakin alumnus and academic staff member since 1999, Ms Susan Ang. Six Malaysian architecture alumni practices provided a founding financial support and internship placements which enabled the program to be implemented by the School in 2001.
The Award was named after Associate Professor Nick Beattie, Head of School 1992-2001 and acknowledged 25 years of service that Associate Professor Beattie provided to the university in various teaching and leadership capacities. Although now retired, Associate Professor Nick Beattie remains fondly remembered as an academic mentor and friend to many international and Australian graduates.
Over the period of 2001 -2006, the Nick Beattie Award was awarded to a total of 13 Deakin architecture students. The program offered much more than the opportunity of an internship experience in Malaysia and Singapore. It offered the opportunity of cultural immersion and insight into architecture design, practice and cultures outside Australia. The students undertook rich learning experiences during their placements and established many lifelong personal and professional friendships.
Appreciation and thanks to all who have supported and participated in this program.
