Deakin’s new Bachelor of Engineering Science brings together studies in engineering, physiology, exercise, and sport science in a qualification that could lead to a variety of exciting career opportunities in the fields of sports or medical technology, with a focus on human performance.
The course is designed for technically-minded students who are seeking a modern and specialised educational experience unique in Australia. It enables students to combine their interest in health or sport with technological skills to provide a career path into a range of areas.

As a graduate of the course you will have the skills and knowledge to become a technology-focused professional capable of creating engineering solutions to challenges in the sporting and medical fields. You will learn about measuring and assessing human performance, as well as the interaction of humans with technology and materials and how that can affect how humans perform and function.
Depending on your specialisation, employment opportunities could include developing instruments to measure and monitor sporting performance, developing improved materials to enhance the performance of sporting apparel and equipment, maintaining and designing medical devices and instrumentation, working on medical equipment in hospitals, designing prosthetics, or working in occupational health and safety.
As a student in the course, you have the opportunity to take part in industry-based learning, internships and a final-year project to help you gain workplace experience and develop valuable networks. The units in the course are mostly prescribed, with engineering, physiology and exercise and sport science units studied at each level.
The Sports technology - electrical major gives you the opportunity to combine your passion for sport with a career with a technology/design focus. You will specialise in electrical systems and will study units in digital electronics, microcontroller principles and microcontroller system design as part of this major. The program is tailored to industry needs and has close links through strong research programs, cutting-edge technology and facilities, and design-based learning. You can access state-of-the-art robotics and sensor systems and, through your final-level projects, gain an introduction to the emerging haptics research and sensors area.
Sports technology is considered to be a developing field of growing importance. As a graduate of the Sports technology - electrical program you could find career opportunities in areas such as human performance monitoring, (for example, equipment to measure the performance of athletes, cyclists etc.), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) designed for sports use, benchmarking of equipment performance, electronic control systems scientist or robotics scientist.
Career opportunities could also be found in areas such as the design and manufacture of prosthetics, occupational health and safety (for example, designing systems and spaces to assist people to return to work), and emergency services and the military (such as designing equipment and spaces for improved operational performance).
Successful completion of the course could also lead to opportunities to undertake further studies in honours (research) and PhD programs.

The courses in Deakin’s School of Engineering are not simply research informed, they are research led. Sports technology and medical technology are connected to a number of key research strengths at Deakin in engineering, health, and science, and are expected to be significant areas of research growth.
As a student in this course, you can benefit from teaching staff who are active researchers in their respective fields. Research in the School is focused around four main themes: Advanced Manufacturing, Sustainable Infrastructure, Health, and Engineering Education.
One example of the sports technology research being undertaken at Deakin is the research and development partnership the University has with leading outdoor sports lifestyle company Quiksilver. Under the partnership, Deakin researchers are working with Quiksilver designers to create the next generation of action sportswear.
The Geelong Technology Precinct, located at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, is home to the Institute for Frontier Materials, Centre for Intelligent Systems Research and Australian Future Fibre Research and Innovation Centre.
Deakin is also home to the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN), the Molecular and Medical Research (MMR) Strategic Research Centre and the Centre for Exercise and Sports Science. The Deakin Medical School is also located at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
