Bachelor of Engineering - Mechatronics and Robotics major
Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus and off campus
Deakin's mechatronics and robotics course is an interdisciplinary program involving mechanical and electronics engineering, with a focus on robotics. The course provides the knowledge and skills to enable you to take up employment across a wide range of employer groups, such as manufacturers of mechatronic-based consumer goods, aircraft control and navigation industry, automated vehicles and automotive industry, other advanced manufacturing industries and traditional mining and agricultural industries.
Deakin's Bachelor of Engineering has been developed in accordance with the requirements of Engineers Australia and graduates are eligible for Graduate Professional Membership, which means your degree could take your career almost anywhere in the world. This course will provide you with broad theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience to help you build a successful career in the diverse roles available to you.
You will undertake common subjects in your first year before choosing to specialise in civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics, or mechatronics and robotics engineering. This format helps you to make a more informed decision as well as gain a broad base of knowledge in engineering.
Deakin’s Bachelor of Engineering places great emphasis on the application of mathematical and scientific principles to produce industry-ready engineers, immediately employable and capable of adapting to an ever-changing future. It is designed to maximise your employment prospects, meeting both your needs and those of the engineering profession. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering you will become a lifelong learner capable of building your career upon a solid foundation of knowledge.
You will learn generic skills including: entrepreneurship, innovation, project management, leadership, technical report writing, presentation, and comprehension and communication. You will also develop an understanding of the ethical basis of the engineering profession and practice, an understanding of contemporary technical and professional issues in the practice of engineering, and an understanding of complex problems and producing innovative solutions beneficial to their organisation and society.
At Deakin, we engage with the engineering industry to ensure our courses are relevant and responsive to the needs of employers in the sector. Our curriculum is informed by the industry leaders and employer representatives on our Advisory Board, to help ensure it is relevant and to help us define and develop the skill set employers expect.
As a mechatronics and robotics engineering graduate you can expect to find employment opportunities in areas such as in the manufacturing of mechatronic-based consumer goods, aircraft control and navigation industry, automated vehicles and automotive industry, advanced manufacturing industries and traditional mining and agricultural industries.
Professional practice units will help you increase your awareness of various generic engineering, technological and professional practice skills, and how those skills are applied in the workplace. In these units there will be an emphasis on group activities and assessment and a focus on the 'real' world.
Geelong is experiencing rapid growth and expansion. This course is based at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, in the hub of this rapidly growing region - in terms of population and infrastructure. As a student, you will participate in site visits and field trips, to gain practical hands-on experience and real industry knowledge.
Engineering at Deakin is different as it is research led rather than simply research informed. Deakin is a significant leader in a number of engineering focussed research areas, most notably manufacturing and materials.
As a student you will have access to recently refurbished, fully-equipped laboratories and cutting-edge computer-aided software that is used in modern industrial workplaces. Accessible lecturers help you get the most out of your university education and provide a friendly learning environment. There is also the opportunity to learn from leading researchers and access facilities at the Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP). Located at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the GTP is home to Deakin’s Institute for Technology Research and Innovation, including the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research and its Haptics Research Lab.
At Deakin we offer you the flexibility and choice to make your learning experience fit with your lifestyle, work and personal commitments. A feature of Deakin’s Bachelor of Engineering is that it can also be studied off campus. Off-campus students experience campus life during specified activities requiring on-campus attendance (approximately two weeks duration for each year of equivalent full-time study). See course structure for more details.
At Deakin you’ll find opportunities to help prepare you for a global future.
In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. To find out more, visit the Global Science and Technology Program page.
Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
Engineering/Commerce, Engineering/Information Technology, Engineering/Science.
The Engineering Scholars Program offers students who achieve an ATAR of 80 and above, all of the sequences in the Bachelor of Engineering with extra opportunities for paid industry internships or research placements and mentoring from our world-class researchers or professional engineers working in industry. The Engineering Scholars Program does not include a paid scholarship; however, students are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships and should refer to the scholarship section on the Deakin website for details. On your application, you should place the Engineering Scholars Program one preference higher than the Bachelor of Engineering to maximise your chances of getting into engineering at Deakin.
