The Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) has been designed for high-achieving students with an interest in continuing onto a research degree in IT after completing their undergraduate studies.
Successful completion of the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) will enable you to apply to undertake a PhD in the field. You will be required to maintain a 70 per cent average to progress to the honours year, otherwise you may exit with a Bachelor of Information Technology degree.
The course offers the option to either choose an honours project that is a continuation of your third year capstone project, or do a research project to prepare for postgraduate research, potentially leading to a career in research.
You will be assigned an academic mentor in IT for the duration of your study to guide, enrich and extend your student experience. The course also provides the opportunity to attend research seminars to broaden your knowledge in IT and experience at first-hand the cutting edge IT research happening at Deakin and in the wider research community.

Hands-on learning
Students benefit from a hands-on approach to learning and all units include practical work using advanced technologies. Deakin students have access to industry standard software in well-equipped computer laboratories. Students also have the opportunity to prepare for industry certifications, such as CISCO CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and the units prepare students towards obtaining certification as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) on completion of the CISSP exam.
In addition, the Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) gives you the opportunity to complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and gain credit towards your degree. Many students take up industry placements with leading information technology companies to gain experience in the workplace and generate contacts in the industry.
Flexibility
Trimester 3 unit offerings give students the opportunity to study over three trimesters. A number of IT units will be offered in Trimester 3. (Units offered in Trimester 3 are subject to change on an annual basis).

In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
