New in 2013, the Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile and Apps Development) has been designed to give you the knowledge needed to help you thrive in the fast-growing and exciting field of mobile apps design and development.
With the increase in the use of broadband and mobile devices, industries of all types are developing new mobile apps to satisfy the needs of their customers. Developments in mobile devices are also shaping and changing the way businesses and their employees work. These developments and changes to consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business needs are driving a demand for people with the necessary skills to work in the mobile apps field.
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile and Apps Development) focuses on the theories, technologies and skills needed to design and develop apps on modern mobile platforms. It is designed for students who are interested in the broad aspects of mobile apps design and development from frontend mobile devices all the way to the backend systems that support mobile apps.
Why study this course?
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile and Apps Development) gives you foundation training in key IT skills as well as specialised skills in mobile apps design and development. It covers key mobile apps technologies from two major platforms: Android and iOS (Apple’s mobile operating system). In addition to technology-specific skills, you will also learn cross-platform development skills through the latest HTML5, backend cloud computing services (e.g. maps) and frontend JavaScript frameworks. You will also gain important generic professional skills such as writing, communication and ethical skills as part of the course.
Experience practical learning
The course has an emphasis on hands-on individual and group project work, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills by putting the theory you are learning into practice. You will develop an understanding of app design and app development in the broad context of enterprise environments, opening the way to a range of potential career opportunities in the field.
In addition, the Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) gives you the opportunity to complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and gain credit towards your degree. Many Deakin IT students take up industry placements with leading information technology companies to gain experience in the workplace and generate contacts in the industry.

From app designer or app consultant to software developer, as a graduate of this course you could find a range of exciting career opportunities in the growing mobile and apps development field. Potential roles include iOS developer, iPhone application developer, Android developer, iOS web developer, app consultant, mobile developer, mobile applications architect, mobile deployment officers and mobile applications programmer. Graduates could also have the opportunity to continue on to further studies.

Leading information technology companies including IBM Australia, Telstra and Microsoft contribute to Deakin's courses as part of the Advisory Board to ensure courses are relevant and produce highly employable graduates.
Flexible delivery
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile and Apps Development) is available as an on-campus course in 2013 at Deakin’s Melbourne Burwood Campus, with plans for it to also be offered as an off-campus course from 2014.
Trimester 3 unit offerings give students the opportunity to study over three trimesters. A number of IT units will be offered in Trimester 3. (Units offered in Trimester 3 are subject to change on an annual basis.)

In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
