Postgraduate courses in Engineering

Deakin's program

Master of Engineering
Master of Engineering (Professional)

Deakin University's postgraduate Engineering program has been designed to strengthen, build on and extend your understanding of engineering principles required for successful engineering careers in Australia and overseas.

You will gain technical skills, a positive approach to problem solving and the ability to work in a team, enabling you to work on complex projects immediately.

You can choose from specialisms in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering or Water Engineering. The specialisms all provide expertise in areas of high demand for graduates.

Flexibility

A number of units can be taken off campus, providing you with greater flexibility to fit your studies in with workplace and personal commitments.

The Master of Engineering can be undertaken as a stand-alone or exit qualification from the Master of Engineering (Professional) program.

Engineered solution for skills shortage

The demand for engineers is fuelled by multiple issues, including a massive increase in infrastructure expenditure in both public and private sectors expected to continue for at least the next 10 years and an increasing global demand for engineers and an ageing engineering workforce in Australia.

The shortage of engineers in Australia will continue and perhaps even increase over the next few years. Engineers Australia has estimated a shortfall of at least 20 000 professional engineers (against a total of about 150 000) to meet current demand in Australia.

As demand for professional engineers continues to exceed supply, this will in turn impact on remuneration for engineering graduates.

Research that makes a difference

Each of the specialisms capitalise on Deakin's current research strengths and industry partnerships. You will have access to fully-equipped laboratories and state-of-the-art technology, including facilities at the Geelong Technology Precinct.

Deakin's longstanding collaboration with the water industry in Victoria ensures leading professional engineers are engaged in the delivery of the water engineering discipline, as well as supervised industry-related projects.

The program is taught by academic staff with extensive and internationally recognised research profiles in engineering. You will also benefit from the scope of available research excellence and teaching expertise from Deakin's Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM), which is recognised nationally and internationally.

Careers

With the strong demand for professional engineers continuing to increase, Engineering graduates have the advantage of being able to be selective about the type of employer they want to work for.

Employers are looking for graduates who are fully equipped with advanced engineering skills and capable of starting work on projects immediately. Deakin's courses produce the job ready graduates that industry is looking for.

Industry focus

Deakin University's postgraduate Engineering program has been developed using input from industry leaders to ensure the courses are relevant and up to date with demand. Continual consultation with industry ensures our program is designed to meet future industry requirements.

Our partnerships with local industry provide hands-on experience to our students, enabling us to train and develop graduates who are job ready. As part of the course there will be regular site visits, guest lectures and project based activities involving professional engineers from industry.
