Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Science and Software Development)

Deakin's Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Science and Software Development) will provide you with an understanding of the technology on which systems are built, as well as how to develop software systems and applications, and form an environment to acquire skills needed for software development.

The course supports students who wish to master software development and will prepare you for both research and development by providing you with a background of computer science and software development including algorithms, software design, programming languages, data structures, databases and data mining, operating systems, networks, distributed systems and software engineering.

The course is structured so that the intellectual material will remain current for a number of years despite the fact that computer languages and technology change rapidly.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Science and Software Development) incorporates hands-on, practical learning that allows you to put theory into practice.

In addition, the Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) gives you the opportunity to complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and gain credit towards your degree. Many students take up industry placements with leading information technology companies to gain experience in the workplace and generate contacts in the industry.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Science and Software Development) is professionally accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

Career opportunities

As a graduate, you may find employment as a software developer, software analyst, software engineer, database administrator, Web designer, network and systems manager, component integrator, tester, system analyst, and IT consultant.

You will also be suited to employment in areas of systems programming, data communications, project management, maintenance of computer systems and design of information systems.

Small classes and accessible lecturers help you get the best out of your university education and offer a friendly learning environment. Deakin students have access to well-equipped computer laboratories and the opportunity to take CISCO units for a head start towards CISCO certification.

Leading information technology companies including IBM Australia, Telstra and Microsoft contribute to Deakin's courses as part of the Advisory Board to ensure courses are relevant and produce highly employable graduates.

Flexible delivery

Deakin's Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Science and Software Development) can be studied on or off campus.

Trimester 3 unit offerings give students the opportunity to study over three trimesters. A number of IT units will be offered in Trimester 3. (Units offered in Trimester 3 are subject to change on an annual basis.)

In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
