Bachelor of Information Technology (IT Security)

Melbourne Burwood Campus, Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus and off campus.

Deakin's Bachelor of Information Technology (IT Security) will provide you with a sound knowledge and understanding of general issues, concepts and practices in IT security.

You will learn in a leading-edge study environment, and graduate as a qualified IT professional. You will gain practical and theoretical knowledge in this critical aspect of IT with an emphasis on understanding and assessing the need for IT security in a working environment, knowledge of the security solutions available – what they are and how they work – and understanding the business, ethical and legal implications of risk management. There is also an emphasis on analysis, investigation, problem-solving, development and technical skills related to IT security.

You will also be encouraged to develop generic skills, enabling you to be an effective and efficient employee.

The course also assists students in completing the material required to become a Certified Information Systems Security Professional.

Why study this course?

You will address real-life information technology security problems and have the opportunity to provide solutions for problems posed by external organisations.

In addition, the Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) gives you the opportunity to complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and gain credit towards your degree. Many students take up industry placements with leading information technology companies to gain experience in the workplace and generate contacts in the industry.

Career opportunities

The Bachelor of Information Technology (IT Security) is professionally accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

As a graduate of this course, you may find employment opportunities in roles such as security analyst, project manager, security system manager, cryptographer, consultant security system development or programmer, information security auditor, business continuity or IT security engineer.

Small classes and accessible lecturers help you get the best out of your university education and offer a friendly learning environment. Deakin students have access to well-equipped computer laboratories and the opportunity to take CISCO units for a head start towards CISCO certification.

Leading information technology companies including IBM Australia, Telstra and Microsoft contribute to Deakin's courses as part of the Advisory Board to ensure courses are relevant and produce highly employable graduates.

Flexible delivery

Deakin's Information Technology courses are structured to provide flexibility for students. The Bachelor of Information Technology (IT Security) can be studied on or off campus.

Trimester 3 unit offerings give students the opportunity to study over three trimesters. A number of IT units will be offered in Trimester 3. (Units offered in Trimester 3 are subject to change on an annual basis.)

In 2013, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment is introducing a new program to help high achieving students add an international experience to their studies. The Global Science and Technology Program aims to recognise, reward and support high achieving students who would like to conduct part of their studies overseas (via an exchange or study abroad program). Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of $3,000 to assist with the travel costs. As part of the program, they will be required to participate in the Deakin Global Citizenship program. Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office also offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
