A liking for maths was an unexpected result of Damien White’s off-campus studies in IT.

“When I left high school I had myself convinced that I couldn’t do maths,” Damien said. “And that was still the case when I started studying for my degree after a break of seven years or so.

“With the encouragement of one of my lecturers I ended up taking three maths units, found them challenging but most enjoyable, and ended up getting really good marks.

“I discovered I really enjoy looking at a question and working my way through to the answer. It’s also a credit to the skills of my teachers at Deakin - they gave me a complete interest in, and love of working with, databases.

“I may even do further studies in maths - who would have thought!”

Damien said studying part time and off campus was challenging in a positive way.

“I think time management is one of the most important skills for being successful as an off-campus student, using the materials and unit outlines provided to map out what you have to do.

“While there are challenges to being an off-campus student, there are benefits too. Importantly in my case, studying off campus and part time meant I was able to keep working and earn a reasonable income while I worked towards my degree.”

After finishing high school, Damien was accepted into a biological sciences course at university, but instead decided to take up a job with a Melbourne software company.

“The motivation to study wasn’t there then; I enjoyed working, the people I was working with and the field.”

Now Business Development Manager for that company, Damien said studying IT with Deakin has given him increased confidence when he is dealing with clients.

“I have greater confidence in my skill set. I can hold a conversation with IT professionals and truly understand what they’re saying. I’m better equipped to meet the needs of our clients.”
