Honours 2012

School of Life and Environmental Sciences

Opportunities exist for suitably qualified applicants to undertake an Honours degree in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. The aims of the program are to extend the candidate's knowledge and expertise within a selected discipline area and to prepare the candidate for employment or more extensive scientific research, which may lead to MSc and PhD degrees.

Admission of Students

Admission to the program will require students to have a Bachelor degree with an average of at least 65% in their best six level-3 units.

Admission to the Honours program is dependent on a suitable research project and the availability of a supervisor. In addition, adequate resources must be available for supporting the student's research.

Honours Program

The Honours program comprises:

  • Research project (thesis) - 60%
  • Research communication module - 10%
  • 3 x 10% coursework modules - 30%

A major part of the program is a research project carried out under the supervision of an academic member (or members) of the School. The project should be such that it can reasonably be completed in 6-8 months and the nature of the project should be such that it can be expected to result in a paper publishable in a recognised scientific journal.

Students will be required to:

  • present an initial seminar outlining their research design, and a final seminar on the results of their research project, and
  • submit a thesis.

Three coursework modules will also be completed, including:

  • literature review
  • research design
  • statistics and experimental design
