Rebecca Kenny Rebecca Kenny is looking forward to getting ‘industry ready’ from work placements she will undertake as part of her scholarship wins. The Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Business Information Systems student is the recipient of the Deakin Target IT award and the IGNITED award. Based at the Waurn Ponds Campus, Rebecca was awarded the scholarships after receiving an ENTER of 91.15 in her final year at Saint Ignatius College in Drysdale. As the recipient of the Deakin Target IT award she receives $10000 over two years and the opportunity to undertake work experience. She also receives a $10 000 scholarship and academic mentoring as an IGNITED (Initiative for a Girls’ Network in Information Technology & Engineering @ Deakin) scholarship winner. Living in Grovedale, Deakin was an obvious choice because of its closeness to home. Rebecca had been to a Deakin Open Day and really enjoyed an IT presentation. “It seemed like a really friendly environment. The IT course sounded interesting and I liked that at the end of the course there was not just one outcome, you could branch into many areas.” Rebecca had not considered a career in IT until Year 12, but once she got a taste of it she was hooked. “In Year 11 I changed one of my subjects and IT was the only suitable subject I could take. I loved it! I loved the practical side of things. We were actively doing things, like making websites and databases. Because it was hands on it kept me interested, it’s much easier to learn when its hands on.” Rebecca gets to do work placements in IT at Target Head Office as part of her scholarship. “It’s exciting to be able to do work placements during my degree. It will get me industry ready. They say it usually takes up to 6 months after graduation for graduates to be work ready, this will give me an added advantage, I will gain experience working in the IT environment and industry, making me work ready. It will also give me direction in my course, by getting experience in a range of areas in IT I will learn what areas of IT I enjoy and do well in which will give me a more defined career path.”
