Paras Mohan Paras Mohan completed his postgraduate studies in Information Technology in 2009. He feels Deakin's flexible learning options have enabled him to match his studies with his career goals. “It’s allowed me to complete my coursework early and made me industry-ready sooner,” he says. “Classes were stimulating. We were encouraged to ask questions and think aloud. The ongoing student teacher dialogue — was an important component of academic assessment — extending well beyond the class,” he says. There was tremendous focus on the teachers’ part and they made a point to connect with the students and care for them individually. Deakin’s small class numbers facilitate this connectedness, he thinks. Paras worked part-time during weekends at an Indian café and restaurant near Melbourne. “Working helped me cover my living costs while my parents, who are in India, funded my tuition fees. All my Deakin mates worked. Work here is good fun as each day gives you an insight into the multicultural and amiable nature of Australian society, aside from the benefits of valuable work experience in customer service,” he says. Paras managed to strike a pleasant balance between studies, work and some socialising. He feels that Deakin’s student support facilities are excellent. “There’s a dedicated team of staff who provide students with support, advice and encouragement, which, I think, is helping them grow academically, socially and professionally,” he says.
