Aaron Cody The blend of skills offered by Deakin’s Bachelor of Design (Architecture)/Bachelor of Construction Management combined course was enough to bring Aaron Cody from Townsville back to his birthplace of Geelong. “The attraction of this course for me was the mix between real world application of the construction management component and the design aspect of the architecture component. I looked at many universities and courses and a lot of them were more design oriented, whereas this course integrates both practical industry skills and design,” Aaron explains. “When I first looked at it I thought it was a pretty good course, and now that I’m in it I’m very happy with my choice.” Now in his fourth year, Aaron says his studies have changed the way he views the world. “The course equips you with the ability to analyse, challenge and understand the creative arts, architecture, and the built environment. It really does change the way you perceive the world. When I started the course, I saw things for their face value. But now I can look at a building, for instance, and I know what’s inside, I know how it functions. “If, theoretically, I decide not to pursue either architecture or construction management, this course would still provide a good basis to go into any career because it has so many different components. For example, the finance and economics subjects have engaged my interest in the financial markets, whilst the art and architectural history subjects have opened my eyes to the role of art and architecture throughout history.” Aaron is planning on following his course with Deakin’s Master of Architecture (Design) and while urban planning is a possible career choice, he is still deciding on his options. “When I started the course I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. It was only once I got into the course I realised that an architecture/construction management combined degree opens up so many different occupations within the construction industry. That’s another reason why I think it was a good choice.” Aaron acknowledges the course can be demanding, but says the effort also has its rewards. “It can be hard work at times, but I’ve enjoyed a great deal of satisfaction looking back upon my accomplishments throughout this degree and reflecting upon how much I’ve grown along the way.” As for being back in Geelong after growing up in tropical North Queensland, Aaron’s one complaint is not really surprising. “The only thing I don’t like is Victoria’s winter!”
