Vengamanaidu Modepalli Vengamanaidu Modepalli began his journey at Deakin studying a masters degree in biotechnology. While he was undertaking his research project (under Professor Kevin Nicholas, Chair of Biosciences, Research, at the Institute for Frontier Materials) he decided to further his knowledge by undertaking a PhD. Vengamanaidu says there are many reasons why he chose Deakin. ‘It has a strong spotlight on research and development and is currently providing great opportunity to Higher Degree by Research students (HDR) by providing scholarships. Deakin is also performing its research in broad areas and extending with great progress.’ Vengamanaidu has been impressed with the facilities and support Deakin provides. ‘Deakin has the best library with wide access to a number of books and e-journals. The University has different instruments for research where HDR students can undertake a wide-range of experiments. The Faculty staff are so friendly and they are available whenever you need their help - especially for international students.’ Starting his PhD in May 2011, Vengamanaidu explains his field of research involves studying the role of milk factors in the development of neonates. ‘Our lab works with different marsupial animals like the Tammar Wallaby and platypus to understand the milk factors. It’s great to work with my supervisors and lab mates - they are so helpful and friendly. Deakin is the place to fulfil your aim in research and it is the best place to be for HDR students.’
