Deakin - Ministry of Education Timor Leste Pre School project
The Pre School project is being undertaken by two Timor Ministry of Education Fellows as an integral part of their Masters by Research program at Deakin University. This is a research trial to evaluate local partnership workshop interventions for three districts in Timor Leste with low kindergarten enrolment rates. The workshop interventions will focus on developing a local preschool strategic plan, providing mentor support to preschool staff, providing additional kindergarten equipment and Tetum reading resources for preschool children to increase home reading.

Deakin - Many Hands International (MHI) (Tobacco Alliance) project
Many Hands International (MHI) a non-government organization based in the Los Palos district of Timor is working in collaboration with Deakin University on preventing tobacco use in the Timor-Leste using a cultural approach. The Ministry of Health Timor Leste has requested assistance from MHI and Health Promotion Officer Mr Thomas Lopes to be a key player in the launch of their first QUIT campaigns as well as take a lead role on Tobacco Free Zone and Retailer Registration & Compliance projects.

Deakin - Communities That Care (CTC) Timor pilot
Communities That Care provides a framework and evidence based approaches for communities to organize and change identified risk factors in their community. The program has been shown to reduce violence, crime, alcohol and drug problems as well as reducing pathways to chronic disease and injury. It also focuses on increasing numbers of students completing school and reducing pathways to poverty. In 2016 Deakin Timor Partnership Fellows (Mr Afonso Soares, Mr Simao Do Rosario and Mr Thomas Lopes) under Professor John Toumbourou’s supervision developed CTC concepts for a pilot site in Dili. CTC has developed a Parent Education Program of instruction and workshops with a focus on positive parenting, smoking prevention and parental reading.
