eduroam for Deakin visitors

Visitors to Deakin who are members of participating eduroam institutions are able to connect wirelessly at Deakin, as long as they have configured their devices according to instructions provided by their home institution.

All visitors to Deakin who wish to use the eduroam service must abide by the wireless usage guidelines.

Services

Visiting staff and students to Deakin have access to Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. The specifications of the eduroam network at Deakin can be found in the useful technical information.

How do I connect?

Visitors to Deakin who wish to use eduroam must ensure they have set up their eduroam wireless connection according to the instructions provided by their home institution. The Deakin eduroam settings will not work for visitors.

  1. Click the wireless icon located at the bottom right hand corner of the system tray.
  2. If the wireless icon is not present in the system tray, click the Start menu, select ‘Connect To’ and click ‘Wireless Network Connection’.
  3. Click ‘View Wireless Networks’.
  4. Select Eduroam from the ‘Choose a wireless network’ window and click ‘Connect’.
  5. Enter your own username (i.e. username@domain.name) and password. It is essential to include @domain.name (the domain name of your own institution) to connect to eduroam.
  6. A progress window will show you the status of your connection and then a successful connection message.

You should now be connected to eduroam.

In order to access any resources at your home institution or to access general internet services, Deakin requires you to establish a VPN connection with your home institution. Contact your home institution's IT Service Desk prior to arriving at Deakin to ensure you can make a VPN connection with your home institution's IT systems, and can access general internet services through this. Alternatively refer to the guidelines from your home institution on setting up your VPN connection.

Deakin does not allow direct HTTP/HTTPS access.

Support

It is the responsibility of your home institution to provide support to you whilst accessing eduroam at another participating organisation.

If you have trouble connecting to eduroam whilst visiting Deakin you should:

  • Contact your home institution and ensure you have the correct configuration.
  • Contact the Deakin IT Service Desk to verify there are no issues with the Deakin wireless network.
  • If you are still unable to connect, then your home institution support staff should raise a request for assistance with the National Service Provider (AARNet).
