Term Definition
IEEE 802.11 b/g 802.11 refers to a family of specifications developed by the IEEE for wireless LAN technology.

authenticate To verify the identity of a user, user device, or other entity, or the integrity of data stored, transmitted, or otherwise exposed to unauthorised modification in an information system, or to establish the validity of a transmission.
encryption Any procedure used in cryptography to convert plaintext into ciphertext in order to prevent anyone except the intended recipient from reading that data. There are many types of data encryption, and they are the basis of network security. Common types include Data Encryption Standard and public-key encryption.

IP Internet Protocol. A packet-based protocol for delivering data across networks.

LAN Local Area Network: a local computer network for communication between computers; especially a network connecting computers and word processors and other electronic office equipment to create a communication system between offices.

SSID Service Set Identifier. The SSID, also called the 'network name', is a name that identifies a wireless network. Each wireless network in any given area will have a unique SSID.
VPN A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of a tunnelling protocol and security procedures. The idea of the VPN is to give the company the same capabilities at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure rather than a private one.
WI-FI Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network.
WPA/WPA2 WI-FI Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) is a class of systems to secure wireless (Wi-Fi) computer networks.
