Internet Software

[ IT support staff: Software from this website is not to be installed on Phoenix workstations without prior consultation. ]

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is the new Deakin supported default Internet browser as of June 2007. If you presently use Mozilla, you need to migrate to Firefox as your browser, and other applications such as Eudora for email, and Dreamweaver, Nvu (a stand-alone version of Mozilla Composer) or plain text editing for HTML page creation.

Firefox is primarily an internet browser, offering a secure, quick, fun and easy to use browser experience. A variety of plug-in, themes and extensions are available from the Mozilla add-ons website to customised, personalise and make your browser more efficient. Your web browser's capabilities can be extended by installing web browser plug-ins to handle video, audio, interactive multimedia and other content.

FTP Clients

Using an FTP client, you can transfer files between your computer and server. Files can be programs for your computer, web pages you've created, or documents you've written.

If you want to transfer files to and from your Deakin home directory, use the following settings in your FTP program:

  • Server: ftp.deakin.edu.au
  • Username: [Your Deakin Username]
  • Password: [Leave Blank]
(you will be prompted for this when you connect)
  • Directory or Path: [Leave Blank]

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Clients

WS_FTP LE 5.08

Fetch 5.1.1

Secure Shell (SSH) Clients

SSH programs give you the ability to connect to and interact with the Unix hosts at Deakin to use some services such as computer programming environments and online databases. They use encryption when communicating with the host to ensure information such as your password is kept secure.

Hosts which are accessible to all Deakin users include interactive.deakin.edu.au and library.deakin.edu.au (the latter does not require your username or password). The client software below should already include these hosts pre-configured. For security reasons, all Deakin interactive hosts require SSH and no longer support telnet.

Mac users : Mac OS X includes SSH built-in. Open Terminal (found in your Utilities folder) and type "man ssh" for information.
