SOCKS Clients

[ IT support staff: Software from this website is not to be installed on Phoenix workstations without prior consultation. ]

Some internet applications are designed to connect directly to servers outside the Deakin network. Examples include chat programs such as ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger, streaming programs such as RealPlayer, and file transfer programs such as FTP clients.

To allow your application to reach the internet, you may require SOCKS client software for your computer. The SOCKS client provides a "bridge"; while SOCKS is running, your application can reach the internet, when SOCKS is not running, your application is confined within the Deakin network.

If your application supports authenticated web proxies, or has its own support for SOCKS5, you do not need to use the SOCKS client with your application. If your application does not support authenticated web proxies, does not support SOCKS5, or has only partial support, you need a SOCKS client. You only need to use a SOCKS client when you are connected to the Deakin network, not when you are connected to your home internet provider.

Note: The amount of data downloaded from outside Deakin through the SOCKS client is attributed back to your Deakin username via the Internet Usage System. To check your internet usage, visit the IUS website.
