Anti-Virus Software

[ IT support staff: Software from this website is not to be installed on Phoenix workstations without prior consultation. ]

Anti-Virus software for Students

As Deakin University's anti-virus software license does not cover student use, we recommend that, at a minimum, students install one of the following free anti-virus tools to ensure your computer is protected. If you have purchased a commercial anti-virus product, you do not need these tools.

AVG Anti-Virus

ClamXav

DAT File Updates

Note: VirusScan and Virex should update themselves automatically, or alternatively, you can manually initiate an update using the VirusScan Console or the Virex eUpdate button. These DAT file updates can be applied if your anti-virus software does not appear to be updating itself correctly, but note that you must already have VirusScan or Virex installed in order to use them. If you have any difficulty applying a DAT update, you should install a SuperDAT instead.

McAfee Security Updates

Stinger

Stinger is a stand-alone utility for Windows, used to detect and remove specific viruses, such as W32/Lovgate@M, W32/Bugbear@MM, W32/Elkern, W32/Nimda@MM, W32/Sircam@MM and many others. Stinger should not be regarded as a substitute for a full virus protection package.

You can also check out the McAfee Anti-Virus Center for the latest information on viruses and virus hoaxes.
