Enhanced Transition Program
This program is held before commencement of the first semester each each year.
The purpose of the Enhanced Transition Program (ETP) is to assist students to manage the impact of a disability, impairment, or long term medical condition on their study and to make the move to university easier. The program aims to orientate and familiarise students with their campus and the facilities that the University offers. After completion of the program students will be more familiar with the University and be able to undertake Week Zero (orientation week) more confidently.
If you have a disability or medical condition which affects your ability in the following areas, you may be eligible for this program.
- reading
- concentrating
- writing
- mobility
- meeting deadlines
- sitting exams
- taking notes
- being understood
- fitting into new places
If you are feeling overwhelmed about the idea of university, this program will assist you with finding out how and where to get information, who to contact for help, and prepare you for university life and challenges.
Overview of the Program
The dates and the duration of the program will vary at each campus however the following topics and activities will be covered:
- Introduction to Student Services and key staff
- Campus Tour
- Introduction to Deakin computer and Internet systems
- What the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) can do to assist you
- Specific study skills to prepare for university study
- Visit to book shop and cafeteria with an option to purchase your lunch
- Researching using the Library and other resources
- Opportunity to meet new students and speak with senior students
Optional session - Assistive Technology training
- Introduction and training on text to speech software such as JAWS, WYNN or Natural Reader
- Introduction to voice activated software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking and creating a speech file
To be eligible for participation in this program:
- You must be enrolled as a Deakin student. If you are not an enrolled student and have an enquiry about this program, please email drcentre@deakin.edu.au or visit the contact page.
- You must be registered with the Disability Resource Centre(DRC). To register for DRC services please complete the DRC registration form and provide supporting documentation.
