The Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) - Facts for Employers

The AHEGS - what is it?

From October 2010 graduating Deakin commenced issuing students with the Australian Higher Education Statement (AHEGS). It is designed to promote a greater understanding of Australian higher education qualifications and graduates, both in Australia and internationally, and enhance the international mobility and professional recognition of graduates. All universities in Australia will be issuing their graduates with an AHEGS statement by the end of 2011. The AHEGS is issued to graduates at the time of conferral (graduation).

What are the benefits to me from looking at an applicant's AHEGS?

The AHEGS will provide you with information on the achievements and the course of study undertaken by an applicant whilst at university and you can be assured that it is fully verified. The AHEGS statements are closely governed by DEEWR guidelines in terms of what can be included and formatted so you can compare candidates from different institutions.

What does it tell me that an academic transcript doesn't?

The current issuing of academic transcripts will not change. The AHEGS is a separate document containing specific information on achievements that have an academic component. These can include faculty prizes and scholarships with a component of academic selection. The Graduation Statement contains information pertaining to an individual award. For example, if a student completes a double degree they will receive a Graduation Statement for each award.

Does it contain information on work placements?

If the work placements form part of a course and are verified by the University then the answer is "yes". The AHEGS does not contain information on work or work experience that is undertaken outside of the student's course. Details of the work placement or internship such as location, duration and dates are not included.

Can I ask for a copy of an AHEGS from an applicant?

Yes but graduates are only issued with one copy so ensure that you do not retain an original; for security reasons it is not available electronically.

Where can I find further information?

Visit the Deakin(AHEGS) website or the DEEWR website.
