There is some exciting work being done at Deakin to enhance the employability skills, professional attributes and career management abilities of our graduates so they are workplace ready upon graduation.
The Careers Education team at Deakin is working with academics to integrate career development learning (CDL) into courses with the goal of ensuring that all students gain an understanding of career planning, employment options, job seeking methods and application and interview skills throughout their studies, through presentations, workshops and the provision of targeted resources.
A new initiative to support this is the Careers In the Curriculum (CIC) website, with a comprehensive three-level program of teaching and learning materials, including readings, activities and multimedia. These address students' Self awareness, Opportunity awareness, Decision making and Transition to Work skills in keeping with the DOTS model of career development (Law & Watts 1974).
In another move to ensure our graduates are prepared to participate and contribute successfully in the changing global work environment, the Deakin Graduate Attributes have recently been added to. As well as developing knowledge and understanding of social, economic and cultural contexts, and ethics and cultural diversity, Deakin programs will now be designed to develop awareness of environmental sustainability issues.
There is now also a new opportunity for employers to raise their profile as an employer of choice with a large number of students at "Engage and Employ: Jobs, Work Experience and Volunteer" Fairs. These are being held at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood on Monday 9 August 2010, 12 pm - 2 pm and at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds on Wednesday 11 August 2010, 12 pm - 2 pm.
These events are being marketed to a range of specific cohorts across a broad range of disciplines to promote work experience, volunteer opportunities and entry level and graduate positions.
Take this opportunity to demonstrate to students the exciting and challenging career paths available with your organisation following graduation!
