Graduate Gateway - Summer Edition 2011

Welcome to the first edition of Graduate Gateway for 2011. Whilst Graduate Gateway is primarily aimed at enhancing understanding of the transition of graduates to the professional labour market, it also provides an opportunity to brief readers on developing issues in the field of employment. I would like to thank Freehills for their permission to use an abridged version of their article on advice to employers on accessing and using information on applicants and staff published via social media sites.

Two recent surveys have provided invaluable information on graduate careers; the Australian Association of Graduate Employers Survey is featured as is ‘Beyond Graduation’ published by Graduate Careers Australia. These surveys provide excellent insights into the progression of students into the graduate labour market and their progress in the first few years of their career. Our featured graduate recruiter this edition is the TAC with an insight of how they approach selecting the best candidates.

Additionally there is news from Deakin University on how we are assisting low socio-economic status students gain professional experience of the workplace and preparation of IT students for job interviews as part of their course.

Finally, we would welcome your feedback on Graduate Gateway and I would ask you to spend a few moments completing the online survey.

Regards
