A Unit Set is the group of subjects which together make up an approved major sequence or specialisation.
A successfully completed major sequence or specialisation is listed on your academic transcript.
Not all courses include major sequences and/or specialisations. Instead, some courses have a prescribed set of units that must be completed to satisfy course requirements and structure.
To find out if your course has major sequences or specialisations, please see the University Handbook.
Your Faculty Course Adviser can also help if you have questions about unit sets.
A Major sequence is a group of related units (a unit set) in a particular area or academic discipline, approved by the Academic Board and listed in the University Handbook under the relevant course. A major can be made up of either 6 or 8 units. A successfully completed major sequence will be listed on your academic transcript and only pertains to undergraduate courses.
Some courses allow more than one major sequence and it depends on your course rules as to how many you can do and whether you can use a unit towards more than one major. Always best to speak to your Faculty Course Adviser to discuss the rules for your course and your options.
A Specialisation is a group of related units (a unit set), which are usually a further study within a particular area or field of study. These too are listed in the University Handbook under the relevant courses in which they are offered. A successfully completed specialisation may be listed on your academic transcript.
You can change your specialisation, but it may mean you need to study additional units to complete your course. This will have an impact on your fees, especially if you have a Commonwealth supported place. You should contact your Faculty Course Adviser to discuss this.
