Community based volunteering

Community based volunteering internships are unpaid placements in not-for-profit, community organisations.

The unit encourage a hands-on approach to learning and assist you to develop 'citizenship' skills and appreciate the impact of your role as individuals in society.

The program offers a diverse range of opportunities such as assisting in a remote village in India, visiting a church or community group, going to Katmandu and volunteering as part of the Tilganga Eye Centre or volunteering at your local Red Cross, hospital, St Vincent de Paul or other not-for-profit organisation.

Community based volunteering (CBV) unit aim to:

  • enhance your learning by participating in activities benefiting the community in roles outside of your chosen course of study
  • develop citizenship, generic employability skills and graduate attributes that enhance your future employment opportunities
  • develop  University partnerships through  student placements  that will provide organisational benefit
  • gain credit towards your degree
  • help you develop 'citizenship' and appreciate the impact of your role in society

The units  involve a range of reflective assessment tasks to facilitate the learning outcomes.

Students source their own placement, however some opportunities are advertised on the DeakinTALENT website.

Community based volunteering opportunities are normally unpaid with Deakin University providing the required insurance cover.

Application process has changed. You must now apply via InPlace.

  1. How do I log into InPlace?

InPlace is separate to Cloud Deakin and Student Connect. Current Deakin students are able to access the InPlace website.

  2. Where do I get my InPlace username and password?

Students use their current Deakin University username and password

  3. Do I need to submit any other documentation to complete my self-placement?

Yes. Students are required to attach the Host form, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) questionnaire, and the Insurance Declaration form (DOCX, 136.1 KB) and a copy of their current resume to your application.

If your placement is outside of Australia, you will need to complete the international OH&S form (DOCX, 122.9 KB) and include with your application.

  4. What happens once I submit my self-placement?

The WIL team will assess your application and will notify you through InPlace on whether application has been ‘successful’ or not successful within five to ten business days.

  5. Why was my self-placement ‘not successful’?

There are many reasons as to why a student’s self-placement was not successful. It can be as simple as the student has not attached all of the required documentation or has incorrectly filled out their self-placement.

Details on the reasons as to why the application was unsuccessful are available through the ‘InPlace Self Placement Dropbox’.

If the unsuccessful application details are more complex, students may have to talk to a WIL team member.

Volunteering placement opportunities

Please note: Deakin University cannot guarantee the availability of placements with any of these organisations and it is the student's responsibility to ensure the organisation is suitable for your needs.

Securing a placement with any of these organisations does not guarantee enrolment in MWL201. Enrolment will only be unlocked once your application for the Community based volunteering unit at Deakin University is approved.
