Introduction to Statistical Reasoning

Statistics pervades all areas of health research, however some of its fundamental principles are not always well understood. This workshop will introduce the basic principles of statistical inference from a conceptual point of view: 1) Estimation (point and confidence interval), and 2) Hypothesis Testing.
Keeping formulae and algebra to a minimum, we will cover topics such as probability distribution, variability, randomness, sampling distributions, point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, type of errors and power of a test.
Using examples we will show how research hypotheses translate into statistical hypotheses and we will discuss the implications of this step in terms of the statistical method to be selected.
Data simulation will be used
- as an aid to the interpretation of confidence intervals, p-values and power of a test,
- to illustrate the uncertainty of the estimates obtained from one study.
Who should attend?
PhD students and early career researchers within the Faculty of Health who would like to gain further understanding on statistical reasoning. Previous knowledge of statistics will not be assumed, but it will be a plus.
