Study opportunities

Study psychology at Deakin and you'll gain access to extraordinary opportunities while applying your knowledge in the real world with professional psychologists.

Your future in psychology

Our psychology courses draw on the ‘human element’ – the ability to listen and empathise – with a focus on learning through real‑life opportunities. With our flexible study options, unique partnerships, and transition-to-work activities, you’ll graduate with valuable practical experiences and professional accreditation, ready to pursue a career you’re passionate about.

Experience the industry

Third-year students enrolled in the Psychology at Work unit will undertake a placement of 140 hours in a psychology-related role, where you’ll have the opportunity to find a placement which matches your interests and career goals. Students must source a placement that allows them to display or develop their capabilities across eight key competency areas:

  • communication
  • teamwork
  • self-awareness
  • problem solving
  • critical thinking
  • initiative
  • reliability
  • planning/organising.

Some examples of tasks students have undertaken on placements include:

  • assisting with preparation of materials for workshops/training sessions designed to develop teams
  • scoring psychological assessment tools
  • placement with the Department of Health and Human Services in child protection services
  • assisting researchers with specific parts of a study and recruiting participants
  • shadowing outreach workers in a community setting
  • writing summary reports of meetings with clients
  • assisting with development and delivery of youth outreach programs.

Deakin have great relationships with their placement partners, which is a really important thing for a masters student who wants to get the best study experience possible. It's been really smooth getting a placement and dipping my toes into the professional world.
