If you have any queries about studying at university – whether it is about researching, writing, understanding criteria or the feedback you received on your last assignment – we can assist.  Consultations are free for all undergraduate and postgraduate Deakin students.

Study Skills consultations: frequently asked questions

What can I expect in a consultation with a Language and Learning Adviser?

To get the most out of your consultation come prepared with some specific questions about your assignment.

When you attend a consultation with a Language and Learning Adviser they will ask you to fill in a brief questionnaire.  You will be asked why you have made an appointment and the session will then attempt to address your needs. Please note that consultations are teaching and learning sessions - advisers do not correct, edit or proofread essays. They do make general suggestions about assignment criteria and essay structure.

Initial consultation usually last for 30 minutes. The length of subsequent consultations can vary - this can be discussed in your initial appointment.

It is always best to see a Language and Learning Adviser as early as possible, even during the early planning or writing stages of an assignment.

What if I am a cloud (online) student?

You can meet with a Language and Learning Adviser or Writing Mentor in person at any campus.

You can make an appointment for a long consultation with a Language and Learning Adviser via email or telephone. 03 9246 8250 (International +61 3 9246 8250+61 3 9246 8250). Once this is done, a Language and Learning Adviser will contact you at the designated time.

Can a Language and Learning Adviser or peer mentor edit my essay?

No. Neither peer mentors nor Language and Learning Advisers edit or proofread essays. The aim of a Study Skills consultation is to assist you to identify areas for improvement and give you advice on how to improve your writing. For this reason it is important that you come prepared with a specific question about your essay.
