Students Helping Students Drop-in Station

SHS Drop-in-station mentors are experienced and successful students who provide free personalised study support.

How can we help?

SHS Drop-in-station mentors are available to answer any questions you may have about your studies at Deakin, including questions about:

  • writing assignments
  • using CloudDeakin and eLive
  • changing units and majors
  • how to meet more students
  • where to practise conversational English
  • how to get involved in university activities
  • accommodation issues

The SHS Drop-in-station is available during the teaching periods of Trimester 1, 2 and 3.

'We've been through it all before and know of some of the challenges students face. As a result we have some handy tips, skills and advice which might just make your experience the best it can be!'

Have a question about your assignment?

We can answer your questions about managing the expectations of writing at university, research and writing  assignments. We can also refer you to a Language and Learning Adviser, if necessary.

Typical questions about assignments which we can assist with include:

  • I have so many assignments due all at once, how long should I spend on each one?
  • Where do I start?
  • How do I start researching my assignment?
  • I am not sure what I have to do with my task, the question is not clear to me.
  • How can I plan my essay?
  • How can I get my assignment to 'flow'?
  • Have I addressed my assignment criteria?
  • I have written the assignment but I am not sure if it makes sense. Can you read it?
  • I got a low mark. Can you help me understand how to improve for next trimester?
  • Can you help with time management and timetabling?
  • Where can I find relevant journal articles?
  • Can you explain referencing?

Can SHS mentors proofread assignments?

As your assignment has been assigned to you, we are unable to change its content because this raises plagiarism and collusion issues.

As critical peer readers we are able to make some general suggestions about structuring assignments and can advise on how to address the assignment criteria.

You do not have to wait until your assignment has been finished to ask us for help. In fact, it is better to come in early rather than on the due date, so that we can make sure someone is available to help you, whether it's a mentor or a referral to a Language and Learning Adviser.
