Mature age and non-school leaver

Non-school leavers and mature age students are encouraged to apply to Deakin.

If you are a non-school leaver or mature age student and don't fulfil the standard entry requirements (such as an ATAR score), you can still apply for Deakin courses through VTAC, but may be required to fulfil different entry requirements to those of a year 12 applicant, such as:

  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Many courses allow you to use this test (a two-hour, multiple-choice test) to assist mature age and non-school leavers in gaining entry. The STAT assesses a range of skills and knowledge you will need for tertiary study. It is coordinated by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) and held twice a year.
  • VTAC Personal History online form This form allows you to provide additional information to support your application. It can be accessed online once you have registered with VTAC. You can only submit one form so you should address all your course preferences and provide details such as relevant work experience and your reasons for applying.

Credit for prior learning

Many mature age and non-school leaver students may be eligible for credit for prior learning.
