Undergraduate English Language requirements

You must meet the English language requirements of Deakin. You can demonstrate that you meet these in a variety of ways for an undergraduate course.

English level required

Each Deakin course has different levels of English required.    Find the course you are interested in studying and note the band which is displayed (in brackets).

How to meet the requirements

You can demonstrate you meet the requirements by one of the following:

  1. Completion of Units 3 and 4  Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) English at or above the level indicated
  2. Previous studies where English is the Language of instruction and Assessment of the Institution as indicated
  3. Completion of previous studies where English generally is not the language of instruction and assessment of the Institution as indicated
  4. Completion of an English language test at or above the level indicated
  5. Achievement of English language proficiency as deemed acceptable by the Academic Board, on a case-by-case basis.

Completion of Units 3 and 4  Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) English at or above the level indicated

 VCE Units 3 and 4 English must not have been completed more than two years prior to application.  Levels of English required for each band are:

  • Band A: 25 in English (English as an additional language - EAL) or 20 in any other English
  • Band B: 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English
  • Band C: 35 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English
  • Band D: 35 in English (EAL) or 30 in any other English

Note: English as an additional language (EAL) was preceded by English as a Second Language (ESL).  Any English includes VCE Units 3 and 4 English, English Language and Literature.

Previous studies in English: where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the institution

You must have satisfactorily completed at least one of the following, no more than two years prior to enrolment at Deakin, unless otherwise specified, at the band required for the course you are applying for.

Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM): C in the STPM 914 English Language or 920 English Literature examinations.
