Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop officially launched the pilot phase of the New Colombo Plan in Canberra this afternoon.

The Honourable Julie Bishop MP, in the presence of the Governor General, Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO, officially launched The New Colombo Plan 2014 pilot program.

The New Colombo Plan is an initiative of the Australian Government that aims at strengthening institutional relationships between Indo Pacific countries and Australia, through study and internships undertaken by Australian undergraduate students in the region.

The official guidelines include provision for:

  • 40 scholarships valued at up to AUD$65,000 each for students to study in one of the four pilot country destinations
  • 700 student mobility places across the four pilot countries for Semester 1 and 2, 2014 as well as Semester 1, 2015.

This initiative emphasises how the Australian Government is encouraging and supporting students to take study and internship opportunities in Asia.
