Beach welcome

Study Abroad students at beach welcome

We know that it can be stressful to move to the other side of the world and study at a new university so Deakin offers a relaxing three-day Beach Welcome Program to help you settle in. This Program, for exchange and study abroad students, is designed especially to make the transition into Australian culture and university life as smooth and enjoyable as possible. And it's free!

After you've settled into your accommodation, we head down to the coast on a Monday morning with a bunch of Australian students who have studied abroad themselves, allowing you to get a flavour of Australian hospitality and the chance to meet new friends.

We travel along the Great Ocean Road, voted by Conde Nast Traveller magazine as the top 'must do' great drive of the world. This coastline is truly a spectacular sight marked by one 'kodak moment' after another. You also get to see Australia's most famous surf beach, Bells Beach, on the Surf Coast.

Beach Welcome Activities

We will be based in the resort town of Lorne for three days and two nights. Surrounded by the rising cliffs and bush of the Otway Ranges, Lorne has a cosmopolitan feel, with sidewalk cafes, walking tracks, beautiful waterfalls, and great surf. There will be opportunities for you to participate in a range of activities including surfing lessons, hiking through the temperate rainforest, beachside yoga, sightseeing along the Great Ocean Road. You will also be able to rub shoulders with the locals at the local pub, or simply relax on the beach and hang out with your new friends. This is a great opportunity for you to relax and soak up the ambience of this wonderful country!

The Program also features useful sessions on making the most of your stay in Australia, including sessions on how to ensure your enrolment is complete, how best to meet Aussies and settle into university life and tips on travelling in Australia.
